I'm still playing around with dealing in old firearms from time to time. Still keep our old motto: ~ BUY ~ SELL ~ TRADE ~ like the old days of the "BUCHORN RENDEZVOUS STORE" In Masonville Colorado.

Here's one that came across my work bench the other day, didn't hang around very long knew a guy looking for a small caliber Leman, plus I priced it right ...

ANTIQUE ORIGINAL PENNSYLVANIA BLACK POWDER LONG RIFLE made by HENRY EICHOLTZ LEMAN of LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA IN THE 1840s 1850s era.

It is marked H.E. LEMAN LANCASTER, PA. on the percussion action lock plate. Rifle is 53" long overall with a 36.25" long chambered in .36 caliber octagonal barrel mounted in a walnut half stock with iron sights front and rear. Has a heavy barrel matched with double trigger, one being the "set" trigger and the other the "firing" trigger within the brass trigger guard, thus giving the rifle a "hair trigger" for extra precise marksmanship. The hammer cocks back to full cock, no half cock and holds once the set trigger has been set. Then it is ready to fire by pulling on the firing trigger. This rifle was made for hunting or target competition back in the day. They also were sold in great numbers for travelers heading West in wagon trains. Leman was known as the Last of the Great Gunsmiths in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, as he designed and built his rifles in quantity for the public.

He was born 3/8/1812 in Lancaster, apprenticed to Melchoir Forrney in 1831. He also worked for the Tryon Co. in Philadelphia until 1834 when he returned to Lancaster to start his own enterprise. He worked at his own H.E. Leman gun shop from 1834 to 1887 when he passed on at 75 years of age.

A legend in his own time as he still is today to collectors of old black powder long arms. This gun has an attractive brass patch box and butt plate with nicely grained stock wood that has had a hairline crack repair around the wrist part of the stock which was not uncommon for these old rifles. You can see where a wood screw has been inserted straight down from the top of the wrist and comes out under the brass trigger guard. There is no flaking, and the screws are in very condition and very old.
